Originally named Butlersburg in honour of Colonel John Butler commander of Butlers Rangers has been home to many historically relevant Canadian Firsts including; The first Capital of Upper Canada, the first census in Canada taken in N.O.T.L. in 1782, the first grist mill built in 1783, the first legislature of Upper Canada convened in 1792, the first anti slavery lefislation in the British Empire in 1793, the first library, first Masonic Lodge, first argricultural society, first settlement in Ontario by United Empire Loyalists and the Law Society of Upper Canada.
Niagara On The Lake includes district heritage communities of Virgil, St Davids, Queenston, Homer and McNab. Niagara on the Lake is one of the twelve municipalities in the Regional Municipality of Niagara. The town is located in the northeast corner of the Region and is bounded by the Niagara River, Lake Ontario, the City of St Catharines and the City of Niagara Falls.
